NNNFB
Niqinik Nuatsivik Nunavut Food Bank (NNNFB) was established in 2001 as a Nunavut-based non-profit organization to help reduce hunger in Iqaluit and Nunavut. Family services increased from 30 to 145 singles, couples, and families in 2022. These figures represent approximately 500 people, 47% under 18.
The NNNFB is managed and operated by volunteers from within the community, with approximately 49 registered volunteers. Businesses, organizations, and individuals donate all funds used to operate NNNFB, and we also receive a small amount of funding from the federal government. Our 2021 annual budget was $80,000. 98% of all funding is used to purchase food for our clients. The remainder of the money is used to cover our costs for our lease, director’s insurance, printing, post office, and fund-raising expenses.
NNNFB also works with other organization volunteers to help support several programs battling hunger in Nunavut. We work with teacher volunteers to help support and add to the “After the Bell” program in Iqaluit. In addition to the food supplied for kids under the program, NNNFB adds to the food bags with added items such as fresh fruit, puddings, nutritional bars, and more.
NNNFB also tries to support other food banks within the outlying communities as much as possible while ensuring our primary goal is achieved. Our volunteers can only go so far, so the more volunteers we get, the better. We guide community food banks just starting up so they can get non-profit status, thus opening many funding avenues through the Federal Government and other sources such as Food Banks Canada.

The World Health Organization states that food safety, nutrition, and food security are inextricably linked. A lack of safe food creates a “vicious cycle of disease and malnutrition” which overburdens public health services, disrupts social and economic progress, and detracts from the quality of life.
